Spirituals - The Varasi Singers

Spirituals originated among slaves in the United States.

They were often forbidden to speak in their own language and they expressed themselves in religious ways using African melodies and rhythms. Combined with the European hymn styles that they were exposed to, religious songs developed that had strong emotions, rich harmonies and words centering on life�s struggles and the overcoming of those struggles through hopes for the next life.

This album contains new arrangements of some of the best-loved Spirituals including Nobody Knows The Trouble I�ve Seen, Were You There, Swing Low Sweet Chariot and My Lord What A Morning.
